Our Story
MacVicars of Melrose is situated in the heart of the Scottish Borders, centred in the traditional town of Melrose with a prime high street location. The premises have been home to a butcher shop for over 150 years, preserving a rich heritage within the local community.
In 2024, ownership of the business passed to us, Neil and Suzanne, following Neil’s longstanding role as manager for more than twenty years. Formerly known as Martin Baird Butchers, we are committed to continuing the proud tradition of quality butchery, while also introducing a range of new products to enhance our established selection.
Where we source our meat
Beef
Sourced from a long-established, family-run business owned by Neil Gibson at Willowford Farm, situated just outside Jedburgh. Our butcher shop has enjoyed an excellent partnership with Willowford Farm for over 30 years.
To ensure the finest quality and flavour, we hang & dry-age our beef for 35 days. This process is enhanced by lining our fridges with Himalayan salt bricks.
Lamb
We select only the finest lamb from local auction mart H & H, sourcing from farms throughout the Borders.
This approach not only guarantees quality but also allows us to support local farming families within our community.
Pork
Our pork is supplied by Stobs Farm, renowned for producing some of the best pigs in the area.
Stobs Farm has been our trusted supplier for nearly 20 years, ensuring consistent quality in every cut.
What we supply
In addition to our range of traditional butcher products, we take pride in making our own black pudding, haggis, white pudding, and more, all prepared in-store. Our selection of homemade pies and savouries are baked fresh onsite throughout the day, offering something for everyone. We also provide a variety of ready-made meals, available either fresh or frozen, alongside an assortment of delicious homemade soups and puddings for you to enjoy.
Why Not Pay Us a Visit
Our shop is open Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 17:00, and on Saturday from 07:00 to 12:30. If you are unable to visit us in person, we offer a convenient home delivery service within the local area.
